The Clearwater-Clear Lake Food Shelf is a beacon of hope and support for individuals and families facing food insecurity across Clearwater, Clear Lake, and surrounding areas. The mission is centered on providing food and support services with compassion and care.
Founded in 1997, the Clearwater-Clear Lake (CW/CL) Food Shelf initially was established at the Lions Park Building, utilizing only 500 square feet of space. For the past 28 years, this small yet crucial facility has served as a vital resource for hundreds of individuals and families struggling with food insecurity. However, as the need for assistance grew, it became clear that the organization needed a larger space to continue fulfilling its mission. In response to this rising demand, the food shelf took a leap of faith in pursuing a larger, more accessible facility.
The CW/CL Food Shelf serves between 400 to 500 individuals each month, offering weekly food assistance as needed. The organization ensures that every client has access to nutritious food, ranging from canned goods and pantry staples to fresh produce and dairy items. Some months, the food shelf distributes over 25,000 pounds of food to families in need. But the impact of the food shelf extends far beyond food distribution. In addition to providing food, the CW/CL Food Shelf also connects clients with valuable resources and information to address other needs. Their compassionate approach ensures that every individual feels respected and welcome, a crucial aspect of their mission.
The heart of the CW/CL Food Shelf is its dedicated team of directors and volunteers. Led by two directors, including Mary Abraham, the Board President, who was named Outstanding Senior during the Wright Co. Fair on July 26, 2024. The organization is supported by about 35 volunteers, each bringing unique talents and backgrounds to the work they do. The diverse team is united by a shared passion for serving the community and creating a positive, supportive environment for those seeking help. What truly sets this food shelf apart is its unwavering commitment to treating clients with dignity. Some residents have commented that stepping through the doors of the food shelf can be one of the hardest steps for them to take. With this in mind, the directors and volunteers ensure that every person who walks in is greeted with kindness, understanding, and a helping hand.
The CW/CL Food Shelf's success and growth would not be possible without the tremendous support of the local community. Over the years and especially recently with the construction of a new building, individuals, businesses, and organizations have come together to help fund and support the food shelf’s efforts. This generosity has allowed the organization to continue expanding its services and ensure that everyone who needs assistance can access it. Whether it's donating food, offering financial contributions or volunteering services, the support of the community has been essential to the food shelf's mission and growth. The CW/CL Food Shelf deeply appreciates the ongoing support that has helped them grow into a larger, more efficient facility. It would not be possible without the support from the community.
