Located in the City of Clearwater, Minnesota, Riverside Nutrition stands as more than just a local spot for nutritious shakes and energy drinks. Established on May 22, 2021, by owner Morgan Nicka, this wellness hub has become a community cornerstone, promoting health, positivity, and a sense of belonging.
A Healthier Lifestyle, One Shake at a Time
Morgan Nicka's journey to Riverside Nutrition began five years ago when she embarked on a personal quest for weight loss and improved well-being. After visiting a similar establishment, Morgan not only discovered the benefits of meal replacement shakes and energy drinks, but also fell in love with the supportive atmosphere. This experience sparked the inspiration for Riverside Nutrition.
"I started taking the products about 5 years ago to lose some weight and feel better! I went into a shop very similar to this and FELL IN LOVE! Not only with the products and how they made me feel, but how great the atmosphere was!" says Morgan.
Riverside Nutrition provides a variety of meal replacement shakes, healthy energy drinks, and “good vibes”. There is a wide variety of shake and tea flavors offered, including featured drinks that showcase seasonal or new flavors. In addition to their products, Riverside Nutrition also offers full body scans to customers seeking guidance on ways to follow a healthier lifestyle. Customers who receive these services are then also able to learn how to make the drinks at home for a reduced cost.
Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Successes
Operating a business is not without its challenges, especially during a pandemic. Morgan reflects on her journey: "I would say my biggest success is just opening up a business during a pandemic and being able to stay open." Yet, she has faced additional hurdles, including a personal setback. Last year, a broken ankle and pregnancy led to a temporary slowdown as a small business with limited staff, but Morgan's determination saw her through the challenges. The business is currently staffed by Morgan and one additional employee, Skylar Wikan.
"My biggest challenge has also been trying to stay open. Last year I broke my ankle, and had surgery, was out for two months, and then was sent on bed rest for a month during my pregnancy," Morgan explains. "With just showing up every day, posting on social media, bringing samples to local businesses, it finally came around again. So, my challenge has also become a success story."
A Community Hub for All Ages
Riverside Nutrition prides itself on being inclusive and caters to all age groups. Morgan emphasizes, "We serve all ages! From young to old, our products are good for anyone and everyone!" Every visitor to Riverside Nutrition is welcomed by a warm greeting and positive atmosphere. Morgan enjoys getting to know her customers personally by asking about their day or weekend. She is often accompanied by her one-year-old daughter while at the shop – who happens to be the “life of the party” around customers.
In addition to Riverside Nutrition’s regular services and products, the shop regularly hosts community events. One of the most popular events is SHINGO – “Shake” + “Bingo”. A game of SHINGO offers take home prizes or store discounts. Another popular activity is a monthly Paint Nite where attendees complete a painting project at the shop, often while enjoying a shake or tea from the shop. It has become a very popular event, with seats becoming fully booked.
Riverside Nutrition is not just about shakes and energy drinks; it's a community hub. Morgan's favorite aspect of operating in Clearwater is the supportive community. She says, "Clearwater is such a come-together town. The community is probably one of the greatest when it comes to supporting small businesses, and I absolutely love that!"
A Move Toward Growth and Appreciation
Looking ahead, Riverside Nutrition is set to move to a new location in Clearwater at 800 Nelson Drive, Suite 105, in early 2024. The business, currently serving around 40 people daily, hopes to double its reach after relocating to its new home. The new location will be situated between American Heritage Bank and Snap Fitness. Morgan is excited about the change and expresses her gratitude to the community: "Our last day at our current location is January 20th. We will be having a customer appreciation day to go out with a bang!” Morgan is hoping for a tentative opening at the new location around February 1.
Words of Wisdom for New Business Owners
For those considering venturing into the world of entrepreneurship, Morgan shares valuable advice: "Stick it out and be consistent! Clearwater is an amazing little town, but it also is an inconsistent one where some days are busy, and some are dead. You never know what you will receive, so be prepared for that, and stay consistent with how you advertise. The people will come if you get the word out enough!"
